Policies and Procedures

Hours of Operation

We are open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. A full programming day, including one hot meal with milk and two snacks with milk/juice, begins at 8:30 am and ends at 4:00 pm, or a part day begins at 9:00 am and child dismissal is 11:45-12:00, including one substantial snack and milk. There is a nominal charge for hours beyond regular programming (7:30-8:30 am and 4:00-6:00 pm) for full time preschool age enrolments only. Due to extended hours, and our own son's love of slides, climbers, sandboxes and things that go "vroom", we have an exciting outdoor playground facility for both full and part time students to enjoy daily.

Our Junior Class is for children 18 to 30 months. Our Senior Class is for children 2.5 to 3.5 years of age. Our Kindergarten Class is for children 3.5 to 6 years of age. Kindergarten Club is for children ages 3-5, a popular morning nursery school class, operates from 9:00 am to 11:45-12:00 noon.

Kendellhurst is closed on the following days: Family Day, Easter Monday, Good Friday, Victoria's Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day and one week Christmas and March Breaks. Kendellhurst is closed for four Professional Development, CCEYA (Child Care and Early Years Act) Days, per academic year, following the required legislation for professional development for our outstanding teachers. These closures are posted every year in our Summer Newsletter. Please note that there will be no deductions in fees as school closings have been calculated into the monthly tuition. Please contact our school to speak to a representative regarding fees information.

Nutrition

Kendellhurst provides all meals and snacks for your child. We exceed the Canada Food Guide and the Ministry requirements for preschool children. We serve a substantial morning and afternoon snack and a hot lunch with milk and vegetables. We understand that children need the fuel to drive their imaginations!

Special occasion and child friendly multicultural theme meals are provided as well. Note: please do not bring food from home as other children may be allergic to ingredients. If your child requires a special diet due to medical or religious reasons, we can usually accommodate him/her. Please inform our staff supervisor and your child's assigned teacher if special arrangements are necessary. Kendellhurst is happily catered since 2009 by Organic Kids Catering: www.organickidscatering.com.

Health and Safety

pon registration, enrollment and medical forms must be completed before your child attends school. It is imperative that all personal contact information be kept up-to-date. Included in this package is a form for all authorized individuals who may pick up your child from school property. If your child is absent from school, we ask that you notify the school as soon as possible so that we may confirm his or her absence.

Kendellhurst strives to be a peanut safe school zone in order to better service the needs of all clients. We strive to ensure that we provide a safe and secure place for children to learn and grow.

Members of our school may have serious and potential life threatening anaphylactic attacks brought on by exposure to peanut products. Peanut products may not enter the school environment.

Since we would like to minimize, or better yet eliminate, any incidents that may cause one to suffer needlessly, we ask that parents take precautionary measurements when entering the school environment after enjoying peanut products outside of the school premises. We understand that this may sound a bit invasive to your privacy, but after seeing the anaphylactic reaction of one suffering from peanut allergies, we understand that brushing your teeth and washing your hands could save someone's life! Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Inclement Weather / School Closures

If the school must be closed for the day due to severe weather conditions, an announcement will be made on our school voice mail and web site News & Events page by 7:00 am.

Medication

School staff will administer prescribed medications (including medications for mild colds, illnesses, etc.) only if the medication is in its original container and accompanied by a physician's note and the school's "Request to Administer Drugs and Medication" form filled out by the child's parent or legal guardian.

Clothing

Children must attend school in seasonally appropriate attire. For the summer, we recommend closed toe sandals/shoes, a sun hat, light cotton garments and don't forget the sun block. For the winter, we feel layering clothes is the most effective means of keeping your child happy.

He/she can put on or take off garments depending on the weather conditions. Two piece outerwear/snow apparel makes life easier for the indecisive potty training child! Please place a full change of clothes in your child's cubby. Toddler age children must have the daily required amount of diapers, or pull-ups if potty training, and wipes. Please do not place any food or drink products in the backpack, or any toys.

Other children may be allergic to the ingredients in the food/drink, and toys from home cause too many unnecessary tears if they get lost, misplaced or claimed by other children as "mine"! We request that your child have rubber soled slippers for school. Slippers may be kept in his/her cubby, or placed in the back pack daily.

Professional Teachers

We have very selective hiring practices at our school. Each classroom has an accredited ECE teacher. In addition, all teaching assistants must be committed to child care as their profession. We encourage and promote special additional certification or educational courses for our staff to keep them updated, fresh and energized for your child. Our hand picked team has been chosen to uphold the values of our school.

Calling all Parents!

Our school encourages parental involvement. We have an open door policy. Parents are welcome to set appointments with their child's teacher as they see fit. We also invite you, the parent, to visit classrooms, participate in field trips or come to our various events such as Parent Breakfast, Summer Barbecue and Meet the Teacher Night. Though parent volunteers are welcome, they are subject to the same expectations and standards as our staff. Parent bulletin boards are located in the cloakroom areas, so please check for updates, including menu changes, special event notices and other pertinent school information. Also for your convenience, children's art files are located in the cloakroom areas. Parents are asked to check their child's art file daily to discuss artistic works and to receive school wide memos.

Please feel free to download our Waiting List Process and Policy for enrolment details.

School Cleanliness

At Kendellhurst Academy, keeping our school clean to ensure the good health of your child and ours is extremely important. We opened the school because most daycare facilities we visited did not offer the positive, clean, fresh environment we expect for young children to grow and learn in. Our school has huge picture windows, cherry hardwood floors throughout, a carpeted circle/play area, and bright, sunny classrooms conducive to learning and play. In addition to the overall cleaning crew, our staff regularly clean and maintain an exceptional level of cleanliness. This maximizes the health of the children and staff, by reducing exposure to germs and viruses. Though we cannot completely eliminate germs and viruses, we can do our absolute best to keep illness at bay. Kendellhurst has been designed for the choosy parent with high expectations and standards. We welcome your input and will do our best to strive for a school that sets industry standards.

Thank you for your interest in our school.
